Alberto Caruso was born in Rome in 1945 and graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1971. In the 70s he was assistant and researcher at the Politecnico di Milano at the history courses of Luciano Patetta and Paolo Portoghesi.
He was a member of the Building Commission of the Municipality of Milan and other Municipalities of the Province of Milan. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the Milan Inter-municipal Plan (PIM). 
He has an architectural practice in Milan, associated with Elisabetta Mainardi. The main works are illustrated in www.carusomainardiarchitetti.com. He has published projects in Domus, Casabella, Zodiac, l'Industria delle Costruzioni.
He is an associate member of FAS (Federation of Swiss Architects). 
In 1996 and 1997 he directed "Rivista Tecnica", an organ of the Ticino Section of the Society of Swiss Engineers and Architects (SIA). In 1998 he founded "ARCHI", the Swiss architecture, engineering and urban planning magazine, an organ of the SIA, which he directed until December 2017.
Today he writes on "werk, bauen+wohnen", of which he is a correspondent from Milan, on Action and on "Il Giornale dell'Architettura". In 2008 he published La resistenza critica del moderno, Tarmac Publishing Mendrisio.
